We had a great program last night. A+ Solutions partnered with Gross Schechter Day School Courtney Evenchik, MA NCSP spoke on one of her favorite topics, Building Self-Esteem And Confidence In Your Child.
Courtney started her talk with a true definition of Self-Esteem. She explained that we have created a generation of praise junkies. We are always saying to our kids, “Good Job!” “Your Amazing!” We might think that this is helpful for our kids, but it’s not.
Courtney showed us that to truly build our children’s self-esteem, we need to use descriptive praise. Descriptive praise can be done by:
Describing What You See:”You put the blocks back where they belong.”
Describing What You Feel: “It’s a pleasure to walk into a clean room.”
Asking Questions: “What was the most challenging part of getting this room cleaned?”
Courtney also discussed the difference between a Growth and Fixed Mindset and 5 specific ways to promote a growth mindset in our children.
1. Have daily learning discussions
2. Give feedback on process only
3. Teach children that their brains can grow
4. Encourage risk, failing and learning from mistakes
5. Encourage and model positive self-talk
